Hardware and Software Asset Inventory
Remotely and agentlessly identify server resources in the data center, and produce a complete picture of server details through full hardware and software inventory.
Match Server Resources with Workload Demand
Rich visualization provides meaningful insight into the fit between application workloads and server resources. Perform deep analysis into server workloads over time and identify servers that are candidates for consolidation or optimization.
Secure Data Containment
Perform onsite data collection and analysis of multiplatform environments with low network and monitoring overhead, from a single and secure location. Completely self-contained and does not require information to be sent outside of the organization.
Designed for Continuous Data Center Optimization
Continuously measure the fit between workloads and resources and initiate server consolidations as required for ongoing server optimization.

Four easy steps for complete data center assessments and capacity plans. Remotely collect server workload and resource utilization to best match server resources with application workload demands.

Step 1 - Inventory

Remotely discover server hardware and software assets without having to install agents. Gather detailed information for each server such as operating system, installed applications, patch levels, CPU, memory, network, and disk resources. Collect application workload data on Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Linux servers by simply connecting to the network and selecting the relevant computers. Data on hardware and resources is collected into a centralized SQL Server database.

Step 2 - Record

PlateSpin PowerRecon collects the key data points to determine workload sizes and appropriate resource matching. Record utilization data over days, weeks, or months and generate custom reports that identify sub-optimal trends such as peaks or valleys caused by batch processes, high business volume, network traffic spikes, etc. Define summary data unique to the project, or drill down to granular levels depending upon the project requirements.

Step 3 - Analyze

Generate custom reports and evaluate workloads to match them with the most appropriate server resources. Identify under-utilized and sub-optimal servers quickly and easily using the expression sorting capability for easy ranking of server workloads by CPU, network, disk, or memory inventory and/or performance. Define resource and workload parameters and generate reports to best fit with the unique data center needs. Rich visualization tools including line, stack and candle charts provide deeper insight.

Step 4 - Consolidate

Once PowerRecon has been used to assess the datacenter, use PlateSpin PowerConvert to accelerate server consolidation projects and stream physical servers into virtual environments such as VMware ESX Server, VMware GSX Server and Microsoft Virtual Server. PlateSpin PowerConvert automatically streams and right-sizes the ideal candidates onto bare-metal or virtual environments over the network using PlateSpin’s OS Portability technology. PowerConvert also performs automated migrations between physical servers, or from physical servers to blades.

Features at a glance

Agentless Operations

Maintain server integrity
PlateSpin PowerRecon is completely agentless, eliminating the need to physically touch data center servers. Servers remain unchanged, all performance and inventory data is collected remotely via standard OS instrumentation capabilities.

Virtual Infrastructure Aware

Deeper insight into server hierarchies
PlateSpin PowerRecon is aware of the difference between virtual machines and physical servers. Easily identify physical servers, virtual machines, and virtual host hierarchies throughout the data center at a glance.

Rich Data Modeling

Define parameters most relevant to your data center
Analyze and compare resources and workloads for a deeper view of utilization trends to make better consolidation choices. Get a high level summary or drill down into the data for the various levels of granularity required by VARs, SIs, System Administrators, Datacenter Architects and Datacenter Managers.

Build Custom Reports

Quickly identify the servers most appropriate for consolidation
Define resource and workload parameters and generate custom reports to accelerate data center assessments and server consolidations. Sort servers by workload quickly to identify trends in resource utilization and match resource supply with workload demands over time. Isolate consolidation candidates and identify workload characteristics before and after consolidation.

Secure On-site Data Collection and Analysis

Data is controlled and contained by the user for optimal security
PlateSpin PowerRecon provides a single inventory and utilization product contained in the data center. No need to export data or ship it offsite for analysis, PowerRecon provides secure data analysis and reporting without the risk.

Data Export

Easily capture and export data
PlateSpin PowerRecon data can be easily exported to a number of formats. Users can export data to HTML, PDF, Word, CSV, Excel or Images for report creation or further data analysis. Additionally, raw data can be extracted directly from the database to business intelligence solutions for advanced statistical analysis.
